Are My iCloud Photos Private?
If you use iCloud Photos, your library lives on Apple's servers. Here's who can see it, and how to make it so even Apple can't.
The default: encrypted, but Apple holds the keys
By default, iCloud Photos are encrypted in transit and on Apple's servers. But Apple holds the encryption keys, which means Apple can technically access them — for example, if compelled by a legal request. It's private from casual access, not from Apple itself.
End-to-end with Advanced Data Protection
On iOS 16.2 and later you can turn on Advanced Data Protection (Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Advanced Data Protection). This makes iCloud Photos end-to-end encrypted, so even Apple can't read them. The trade-off: you're responsible for recovery (a recovery key or contact), because Apple can't reset it for you.
